The most common question we get from parents: "I already have Family Link. Do I still need YouTube Mentor?" Short answer: they solve different things. They complement each other. Here's the difference in detail.
Family Link — what it does
Family Link is a device-level control tool. You use it to manage a child's Google account and Android device. Specifically:
- Daily time limit on the device
- Bedtime — turn off the device at a set time
- Approve / block apps (Play Store installation)
- Device location
- SafeSearch in Google and YouTube Kids (younger children only)
- Time limits on specific apps
What Family Link doesn't do: show you what specifically your child sees on YouTube. It says "your child was on YouTube for 2 hours" but not which videos and which channels.

- Child is under 8, uses YouTube Kids
- Main parental concern is total screen time, not specific content
- You have clear rules and expectations, child follows them

- Child is 9+ and uses regular YouTube (not Kids)
- You want to know content, not just time
- You're concerned about influencer / clickbait / drone channels that Family Link can't separate

- You're looking for conversation topics with your child, not more bans
Combination — ideal
Most families we talk to find most benefit in both together:
- Family Link sets boundaries — 1.5 h YouTube per day, shutdown at 9 PM
- YouTube Mentor shows what the child watches during that time, providing topics for conversation
